As seen on ‘A Place in the Sun’: the emblematic seafront villa of Mojacar Playa ‘Casa La Mena’, stands majestic on a hilltop. It comes with 360 degrees of stunning views. In the East there is Mojacar Playa and its seaside boulevard, in the Southeast the Mediterranean Sea, to the South there is Playa Macenas and its Playa Macenas beach and golf resort and the mountain range of Sierra Cabrera to the West and North.
The villa’s privacy and views are protected by its more than 18 acres of sloping mountain land.
The villa was designed by the Californian architect Geoffrey Challan, who studied the influence of nature’s elements on the property and then incorporated his findings in a design true to the architectural history of Andalusia whilst caring for the comfort of a growing family.
One of the remarkable details in the design is the positioning of the windows that let the villa benefit from the warmth of the sun in winter. In summer, when the sun is 18 degrees higher, they provide exactly the opposite effect. Challan designed the pool area with its travertine terrace out of the sea wind and west facing. This makes it both a more enjoyable area and conserves the water temperature more efficiently.
It is an ‘Andalusian house’ and the architect incorporated historic materials such as antique, handmade roof tiles from Granada, similar to the ones used for the Alhambra.
The mountain on which the villa stands, was attained over 40 years ago by its current owner and his friend. They split up the mountain between them and each built a stunning villa. When you enter the property via a winding private asphalt road, you pass the friends’ villa before you reach the higher positioned villa ‘La Mena’.
The villa’s entrance runs through a romantic arched passage, completely covered by green vine plants, to an impressive double wooden door. The entrance hall leads on the right to the spacious lounge, with observatory and an authentic Andalusian tapas bar incorporated. This bar is hidden behind wooden doors, a few steps up from the lounge and can double as a podium.
The lounge comes with a very high ceiling with Moresque curved corners and a marble fireplace. It is a stunning room, but it almost fades away when you gaze at that gorgeous scenery behind the windows.
The entrance hall also leads to an office, a guest toilet, the pool area and to the dining room. The bright dining room overlooks the 200 sq.m. pool area via three French doors. From this room you also have access the south facing porch that overlooks the Mediterranean and Playa Macenas.
Behind the dining room is a hall with storage space and a half open kitchen with sea views and access to the porch. The kitchen divides the properties’ private quarters from the entertaining rooms. An arch opens to a breakfast bar in the spacious family room. This room has large windows and sea views. It is a spacious room divided into a dining area and a comfortable lounge with large fireplace.
From the family room, you arrive in a hall with on your left large glass doors that open to the pool area. Opposite, your will find the corridor that leads to the bedrooms and to your left, a few steps take you down to the master bedroom with lounge area, a walk-in closet and an en-suite, marble bathroom with double vanities, shower and hydromassage bathtub. The bedroom has a private southeast facing terrace.
Via the corridor you can access three more bedrooms and three bathrooms. At the end of the corridor is another access to the pool area. Each bedroom has a Juliette balcony with unique sea views. The bathrooms are opposite the bedrooms. One of the bathrooms has a sauna.
There is a separate guest or caretaker’s apartment under the main house, with a south facing terrace and porch. It consists of a small kitchen, a bathroom, bedroom and lounge.
The villa has a double garage with direct access to the house, a ‘water house’ where they have a huge water deposit, from the time that they did not yet have tap water. This could be easily turned into a small guest house. Behind the water house is a tennis court, that needs some renovating.
The villa ‘La Mena’ is unique and well situated. It is private and tranquil. The villa makes you feel miles away from everything, while you are actually close to all amenities as it stands between the beach and seaside boulevard of Mojacar Playa and the beach and golf course of Playa Macenas. It is a very solicited house by film crews, but its current owners only invited in two film crews: one was for the shooting of a video clip with the members of Queen and the other was the crew of ‘A Place in The Sun’ . The makers of the popular Channel Four TV programme decided to dedicate a special feature on this villa, now that it is for sale. The link to the video of the program will appear here after its original broadcast.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire a hilltop with a stunning private villa and its surrounding land at Mojacar Playa’s beautiful seafront.
